McHugh and Kerr Millinery

After working for a few Muskegon milliners in the mid to late 1890’s, at the turn of the century Rose McHugh (Foegen) opened up her own millinery shop called McHugh and Kerr Millinery with business partner Minnie Kerr. It was located at 89 W. Western Ave. between First and Second Streets. (Citizen’s Phone was 171.) They made fashionable women’s hats. A glimpse at their customer ledger highlights many familiar names in the Muskegon area: Beardsley, Neumeister, Beerman, Vogel, Morse, Rafferty, Rodgers, and Campbell, while rent was paid to “Mrs. Wasserman.” They paid $20.00 rent in 1901!

Rose Connelly/ Conlee, Stella Bauknecht and Stella’s sister, a Mrs. Strong, helped to run the business with her. 1904-05 Rose received a new partner- Mrs. O.C. Conlee. By 1906-07 McHugh and Kerr had a change of address to 90 W. Western Ave. and was also about to change hands.

Rose owned McHugh and Kerr until 1907-1908 and then she sold her half to Mrs. August Auener of Detroit. Mrs. Auener owned a millinery store at 88 Western Avenue also. The sale of the hat shop allowed Rose to raise her daughter Letitia. There is no mention of McHugh and Kerr in the 1908 and later City Directories.
