Frank Foegen

Frank Foegen

Frank Peter Foegen was born February 22, 1876 in Muskegon. His parents were Elizabeth (“Libby”) Vogel and Peter Foegen. Both his parents died young, but left him a saloon, dance hall and boarding house on the S.W. corner of Clay Ave. and Ninth Streets called Foegen’s Hall/Cincinnati House.

Sunday, December 8, 1895 Frank was skating and playing a game of “shinny” with several friends west of the Goodrich Dock where he got on thin ice and fell through! Three friends came to his rescue and managed to get him out of the chilly waters. He was able to go to work the next day, after narrowly escaping drowning. The Muskegon Chronicle had a detailed account of the commotion.

1895-96, Frank was a clerk for A.B. Falk. 1897-98 Chase Bros. Piano Co. employed him.

On April 26, 1898, Frank voluntarily enrolled in the Michigan National Guard Company C 34th Regiment Michigan Volunteers 5th Infantry. He participated in the Spanish-American War, and the assault on San Juan Hill under Captain Frank C. Whitney. He was honorably discharged May 10, 1899.

January 4, 1904 he married Rosanna (“Rose”) McHugh in Muskegon. Frank gave Rose a gold watch for their wedding. First child, Elizabeth was born December 14, 1904 and died November 10, 1906. Seventeen days later (Nov. 27th, 1906), second daughter Letitia Frances was born. Letitia married John E. Mason.

Frank inherited his Father’s saloon upon turning age 21. He was proprietor of Foegen’s Hall/Cincinnati House at 352 W. Clay Ave. after his stint in the Spanish-American War. 1902-1903 Directory indicates a Citizens Telephone 786; Michigan Telephone 245, along with “Choice Wines, Liquors and Cigars.”

1913 City Directories list Frank with business partner Gustav Jaschek (Jaschek and Foegen Insurance) until 1918-1919, at 352 W. Clay Ave., the address of the saloon. 1922-24 he worked as a laborer for Continental Motors. 1926-28 Frank was employed with John Hancock Insurance Co. at 969 First St. in Muskegon.

Rose and Frank suffered marital problems and eventually separated.

Frank died December 16, 1932 at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois, and is buried in Muskegon.
