Fanny was born in Dundalk, County of Louth, Ireland on June 13,
1812. Married to Percival McHugh, she was widowed when he perished in a tragic theater
fire in Quebec. This fire occurred on June 12, 1846- the day before
Fanny's 34th birthday! A newspaper called "The Berean" in Quebec
mentioned a Mr. McKeogh, a schoolmaster, from Malbaie in this
fire. Fanny and Percival were parents to Patrick McHugh and both
were school teachers as well.
Fanny was an English teacher at a school in New Liverpool, Quebec. Fanny acquired a store/saloon in St. Romulad's Parish after Percival died. The area of the store was near Levis, a little island, located approximately 5 miles across the Jacques Cartier Bridge. It was rumored that she could identify all the brand names of the whiskey's, just by their smell! A tough old gal, she was known to secretly smoke a pipe and snuffed also! An old meerschaum pipe that was in the family, could possibly have belonged to her!
See the pages on "Fanny Purcell" and "Percival McHugh" as they attended St. Romuald Church in the 1840's-1870's. Even after Percival's death, the family continually tithed to the church.
Married in Ireland, immigrated to Canada. Moved to Muskegon with son Patrick and is buried there.
